Polls show sexual harassment not clearly defined

According to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017, 22 percent of women surveyed said that they had experienced sexual harassment at work. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll, 23 percent of respondents said that they had experienced such harassment at the hands of a powerful man. In a poll conducted by Gallup in October 2017, 42 percent of respondents said that they had experienced sexual harassment in general. These results might be of interest to Tennessee employees.

It is important to note that men and women differ in what they think constitutes harassment. For instance, a poll from the Barna Group found that women were more likely than men to say that constantly asking a co-worker on a date was harassment. While it may be difficult for people to define what sexual harassment looks like, most acknowledge that it is a problem. A Pew poll conducted late in 2017 found that roughly 66 percent of respondents said that such harassment was a widespread issue in society.

This was compared to 28 percent who thought that these incidents were more of a reflection on the people exhibiting such behavior. Although many people believe that workplace sexual harassment is a problem, many also believe that employers care about stopping it. For instance, 87 percent of respondents to a NPR/NewsHour/PBS survey said that their employers protect victims of such abuse.

Those who hear lewd comments about themselves in the workplace may be exposed to a hostile working environment. Unwanted sexual advances may also constitute sexual harassment in the workplace.
